Winter Workout! 3/7/15

We drove up this morning to visit Sassy on a gorgeous Saturday morning.  It was bright and sunny, and the temperature was on its way up, probably about 30 when we were there.

First we got to say hi to Sassy in her stall, where George happily doled out carrots.

Looking at Sassy in her stall, I believe that she’s grown a bit.  She looks taller this year to me.  She is in good weight, and shiny.

She looks very happy physically.  No back soreness- she was standing nice and square, and didn’t mind being brushed all over.  She even picked up her hind feet very nicely, which is probably the first time I’ve seen her do it so readily.  Some of you may not know that Miss Sassy does not usually care to have her hind feet picked up.

After saying hello, we watched her being groomed and tacked up.  After that, she and her workout buddy loaded onto the trailer and away we went!

A few minutes later, we pulled up to today’s workout area at Fair Hill.  The course for today was a large field with a gradual hill.  The course was a little under a mile per loop.

After mounting up, the horses began with a nice walk out.  The snow was maybe 6 inches deep, and the footing appeared to be pretty good. It was a great workout – trust me on that- I had to tromp part of the way down the field to get these pictures and I was huffing!

Sassy was very well behaved, and you can see that Dave can ride her out one handed.

It is pretty chilly out, but the horses don’t mind it at all.  The riders are bundled up, and you can just see Dave’s nose here, but Sassy appears happy in her quarter sheet.

After the walking, they picked up a nice working trot for the first loop.

For the second loop, they stepped it up to a gallop.

Then a calm walk back to the trailer.

After a cool-out walk, the horses got to roll.

Sassy is looking proud of herself after her roll.

And then on with the cooler, and back on the trailer home!

Sassy unloaded nicely and cooled out the rest of the way, and then went out for her daily turnout in her field.

Go Sassy!

Thanks for the nice pictures of Sassy and you don’t look bad either (ha). I really hope this is her year and I know you are anxious to get things moving–I wish you all the best. Also, if you see some free time for lunch or dinner, please let me know.
    Be well.
