Sassy ran a great race on October 5th!

It was a beautiful day at PARX for Sassy’s 11th race. She was in the 8th race, a PA bred restricted Allowance race for fillies and mares 3 YO and up, non winners of a race other than Maiden, Claiming, Starter, or State Bred.

Before the race, we gave some general instrucions to the jockey Kendrick Carmouche: Sassy has been breaking very quickly and running off with the rider. Try not to fight her, instead ease her when you have a chance. She seems to do best when she stays within striking distance of the front runners, but just a little behind. She does well going between horses in the stretch, but please don’t try to jerk her around a wall of 3 or 4 horses as she will not do well.
Kendrick said, “thanks, I know just how to ride her”, and away they went.

At the start of the race her odds were 5.5:1, so some of our team got a nice payout!. There were two scratches in the race, so while her number was 7, she started from the #5 post postion.

She broke well from the gate and quickly settled in on the rail behind the #6 horse. Two other horses came up on the outside, and Sassy was in 3rd or 4th for most of the race, comfortably nestled in behind the leader on the rail, saving ground. As they came around the final turn, Sassy came off the rail a little, trying to find some room, and then Kendrick took her between horses to take the lead. Just in front of the wire she was in front of the pack by a stride and then the other horses came on in their final drives. She finished the race ahead by a neck!!

Very exciting!! It was great to see her responding to the jockey to run a controlled and intelligent race. She ran comfortably just off the pace and had energy at the end to make the final push in the stretch to get ahead and then hold on for the win.
